What players said about "The Axe of Kolt"

It's only oldschool fantasy but I like it.,

February 28, 2020 by Rovarsson (Belgium)

This is cliché fantasy galore and it's great! Step one: set expectations to sorcerers, dwarves, a magic axe and all that. Step two: don your Hero-attire and rush in! Step three: be stopped in your tracks by this or that puzzle that is cleverer than you thought, wander through a forest searching for poultry, witness a demonic sacrifice...
It's good fun and the Hero of the day should count his blessings that you're the one guiding him because there's a few hard and complex puzzles. (Heroes aren't all that bright in the noggin, you know). It's also fantastically long. This is one to sink your teeth into. Clear an hour a day in your schedule for a month to play this. You might get to the end by then.
AoK does show its age: some non-interactive forest-locations all alike, lots of death, some learn by trial-and-death, timed sequences. I didn't mind any of that because: fun!
In the end, it's a great straightforward fantasy romp that had me tied to the screen for some weeks.
A Should-Play!

THE SPECTRE OF CASTLE CORIS

The Adventures Of Alaric Blackmoon - Episode 2:

You are Duke Alaric Blackmoon, recently given that title and the duchy of Charlton by a grateful King Kelson as a reward for finding the lost "Axe of Kolt" and helping to rid the land of the Xixon lizardmen.

You are touring the towns and villages of your new demesne when you hear of strange events that were taking place in the town of Corwyn - a "spectre" is rumoured to be killing townsfolk and people are leaving the town in droves.

Can you solve the riddle of "The Spectre of Castle Coris"?

What players said about "The Spectre of Castle Coris":

Review by Denk (Denmark) Sunday 8th May 2016:

Yet another great adventure from Larry Horsfield. The Spectre of Castle Coris is the sequel to the Axe of Kolt, and just as its predecessor it is a modern improvement of an old spectrum adventure. This time Alaric Blackmoon has to solve the mystery of a spectre, which terrorizes the town surrounding Castle Coris. The game can roughly be divided into two parts: First Alaric must gather whatever he needs for his quest outside the castle. Afterwards he must enter the castle and free the town of the evil spectre.
The game is rather big but contains a built-in map, which is well-structured and very convenient (except when playing online – download the game instead). There is a nice use of text colors, which gives life to the overall fine descriptions. The implementation is very good and rarely if ever is guess-the-verb an issue. Anyway a vocabulary command is implemented.
The puzzles range from easy to hard and the player must remember to examine and search everything as well as ask the right questions. Note that the game distinguishes between “ASK [person] ABOUT [topic]” and “ASK [person] FOR [object]”.
Overall, this is a highly enjoyable game, which just reaches the five-star mark.

DIE FEUERFAUST - THE FIST OF FIRE

The Adventures of Alaric Blackmoon - Episode 3:

You are Alaric Blackmoon, Duke of the Duchy of Charlton in the kingdom of Hecate. The stories of your exploits in finding the lost "Axe of Kolt" and solving the mystery of "The Spectre of Castle Coris" have spread far and wide, even across the seas.

A deputation of Teutonic Knights from the Hanseatic League, a confederation of City-states far to the south across the Baltic sea, have come to ask for your help in find the stolen symbol of the federation, "The Fist of Fire" - or in their language, "Die Feuerfaust".

Eager for some action, you readily agree, and set sail for Lubeck, the capital of the Hanseatic League. However, a violent storm hits the ship one night driving it onto a reef. You are thrown overboard and manage to cling to a broken spar.

You are knocked unconscious and wake up next morning on a deserted beach.

Review by Rovarsson (Belgium), Tuesday 12th May 2020.

Rags to Riches - A Second Time:

Die Feuerfaust is the third installment in the Alaric Blackmoon-series by Larry Horsfield. Having played and tested the previous two, I knew pretty much what I was in for, and looking forward to it.
I was not disappointed. Unapologetic (have I used this word in an Alaric-review before? I just might have...) oldschool adventuring, big and varied settings, some use of magic, some killing of foes, and at least one very elaborate, well thought out puzzle (Have you ever tried any horseriding? Wait till you try riding a wild Zampf).
Also: some lack in depth of implementation and interactivity in the large and sprawling settings, as is to be expected in the oldschool tradition.
A classic storyline drives the game forward: Whereas Alaric was a run-down mercenary going on a quest that lead him to glory in Axe of Kolt, in this game Alaric is stranded after a shipwreck and has lost all his belongings. He must work his way through various obstacles and tasks toward his final goal, recovering the famed Fist of Fire.Nothing new, but tried and trusted adventure fare.
Many NPCs, most still smelling of the cardboard they were cut out of, some more fleshed out. All do what they're supposed to do in a text-adventure such as this: drive the action forward with clues and gifts.
Many, many puzzles, most quite straightforward and not too big. And as mentioned, a great Zampf-taming sequence to sink your Hero-teeth into.
All in all, the best of the three I have played so far. The evolution begun in Spectre of Castle Coris continues: tighter gameplay, clearer subgoals so less wandering about, more engaging story.
Not must, but certainly should-play.

THE FORTRESS OF FEAR

The Adventures of Alaric Blackmoon - Episode 4:

You are Duke Alaric Blackmoon and after your exploits in finding "Die Feuerfaust - The Fist of Fire" and restoring it to its rightful place in the cathedral in Lubeck, you arrived at the vast Marianberg Fortress for your initiation into the Order of the Teutonic Knights only to find that the fortress has been captured by the evil sorcerer Wladyslaw.

You are faced with the daunting task of finding your way through the fortress to the final confrontation with Wladyslaw.

Are you man enough to accept the challenge?

What players said about "The Fortress of Fear":

Review by Denk (Denmark), Monday 14th November 2016:

The Fortress of Fear (FoF) is the 4th episode of The Adventures of Alaric Blacmoon. On the other hand, it was the first Alaric Blackmoon game to be written with ADRIFT, so I was quite curious if it had the same quality as the previous episodes. I think it has and overall FoF is a very fine game.

Without going into too much detail, Alaric must get to the bell tower of a big fortress, which is under siege by an evil sorcerer. The sorcerer has slaughtered most of the good staff of the fortress so there are ghosts everywhere requiring objects to let you pass. In addition, they might help you, if you help them. You will also meet a few people who are still alive, and in the end, you will of course face the evil sorcerer.

The game has the same appearance and feel as previous episodes, which is good. As usual, it is necessary to search, look under and look behind objects whenever it makes sense, to ensure you do not miss an object. The puzzles range from easy to difficult but always logical.

If you become stuck, the first place to look for inspiration is the VOCAB command, which gives you a list of verbs understood by the game. Typing help gives you the email address of the author, which I did use more than once since the game is very big and I believe most people will become stuck at some point. I encourage everyone playing Larry Horsfields games to ask for help in this way instead of just giving up, since his games have a lot to offer.

Since the game is very good, it certainly qualifies for at least four stars. I did consider five stars but I decide to stick to four this time around, which is also a very good rating. If I should comment something I was less fond of, it would be the time-based events by the end of the game, which requires that you type a little fast if you do not want to die. This is just my personal preference that I do not like real-time elements in text adventures. It is not a big problem though since the player can undo his last moves and try again.

EDIT: I have subsequently been informed that it is possible to disable the timed moves by typing TIMEOFF. This was actually described in the playing instructions and list of commands but I have overlooked this. This is a cool little feature. Thus my above reason for not giving five stars is not really valid, so I adjust my rating to five stars for this highly enjoyable game.

THE LOST CHILDREN

The Adventures of Alaric Blackmoon - Episode 5

You are Duke Alaric Blackmoon and since your return from the Marienburg Fortress (see "The Fortress of Fear"), you have settled down to a more peaceful life as Duke of the duchy of Charlton in the kingdom of Hecate.

Then, just as things had started to get a bit too routine and humdrum again, you start to get reports of strange goings-on in some of the more remote villages in Hecate - children between the ages of 11 and 15 have started to go missing at night, apparently kidnapped from their beds without a struggle. You find that the children have been abducted and taken through a mystical portal to another part of the world.

Can you find the children and bring them home safely to their loved ones?

What players said about "The Lost Children":

Review By Denk (Denmark), Thursday 17th November 2016:

The Lost Children is the fifth game in the Alaric Blackmoon series. It is somewhat smaller than previous episodes but the high quality is the same as previous episodes and the game has the same implemented commands such as VOCAB (list of words understood by the game).
First I must mention that I was a playtester for this game. Still I enjoyed the game very much.
In this game Alaric must investigate the disappearance of several children in Hecate where Alaric is duke. The investigation leads to a megalith with a magical gateway, which leads to another place far from Hecate. Alaric goes through this gateway in the prologue and once on the other side, the game begins.
Without revealing too much of the story, Alaric must investigate this new area, where he will befriend some characters and he will need to equip himself for the final encounter with those responsible for the lost children. And hopefully he will save the children in the end.
The game has the same feel and appearance as previous Alaric Blackmoon games, and still its own personal touch. Though it is still important to search and examine things, this game has less emphasis on looking under and behind objects. Instead conversation is quite important, at least with some characters. It is important to ask many questions to some characters, not just asking ABOUT topics but also asking FOR objects. Of course, there are many traditional puzzles as well.
This game is really good - as usual for Alaric Blackmoon games - but also tough in forgiveness. Throughout the game you will have to choose how you spend your money before the shops close. So choose wisely and save often.
All in all another Alaric Blackmoon game I highly recommend.

Review by The0didactus, Sunday 17th November 2019:

Larry Horsfield has a really excellent way of making his games feel like real adventures. It's something about the scripting that goes into small objects like clothing that makes me feel like I'm really there.
In general, I dislike games in the "light puzzler" genre, but when the setting is developed enough, it becomes really fun. This is especially true for this addition to the long-running blackmoon series, because the setting is something a little outside of traditional fantasy: early-modern north america as seen by an explorer from a fantasy realm.
This might be my favorite game in this series so far.

THE LOST LABYRINTH OF LAZAITCH

The Adventures of Alaric Blackmoon - Episode 7:

Your friend Magor has discovered the location of a lost grimoire, written by the sorcerer Lazaitch, that contains the secret of perpetual motion, knowledge that will hopefully change the world. The grimoire is in a tower at the heart of a vast labyrinth in a far land beyond an area known as the "Forest of Misery".

You take on the daunting task of travelling to this place - can you find your way through THE LOST LABYRINTH OF LAZAITCH and retrieve the grimoire?

What players said about "The Lost Labyrinth of Lazaitch":

Review by Denk (Denmark), 14th December 2019:

I helped beta-test this game. This is the 7th game in the Alaric Blackmoon series and as usual, it has great puzzles and a good atmosphere.
This time the sorcerer Magor sends you on a quest to find the Grimoire of Lazaitch in another land east of Hecate beyond the Forest of Misery where you will find the Lost Labyrinth of Lazaitch, which you need to go through in order to find the grimoire. The game begins just before you enter the Forest of Misery.
Without revealing too much, you will encounter some objects from previous episodes. However, the game is designed such, that you don't need to have played other episodes - you can just go ahead and play this episode.
The game is written in Larry's usual style and still, as always, each of his games has a unique feel. This game is no exception. I highly recommend this game.

RETURN TO CASTLE CORIS

The Adventures of Alaric Blackmoon - Episode 8:

The intrepid Duke has returned to Castle Coris, where he thwarted the Xixon sorcerer Zalazar's plan to destroy the world with a horde of demons from Hell (See THE SPECTRE OF CASTLE CORIS). The castle has been undergoing renovation by Baron Coris's heir, Thorion, who has found a mysterious tunnel leading from the cavern where Alaric fought the sorcerer and rescued the would-be sacrifice, Megan. A riding accident has prevented the Baron from investigating where the tunnel leads, so he invites Duke Alaric to explore the tunnel.

What mysteries await Alaric as he enters the tunnel? Find out in RETURN TO CASTLE CORIS

RUN, BRONWYNN, RUN!

Adventures in the World of Alaric Blackmoon - Episode 1:

You are Princess Bronwynn of Alizon and, to your horror, you find that your father has promised your hand in marriage to the loathsome Prince Timothy of Xabia, a well-known womanizer and gambler. After you refused to have anything to do with this outrage, your father has had you locked in your rooms until you accede to his wishes.

You realise that the only way you are going to escape from this marriage is to seek sanctuary with your cousin King Kelson of Hecate.

Unfortunately, Hecate lies many kilometres to the west on the far side of Xabia and first you have got to think of a way to get out of the castle without being caught by any of your father's guards.

To escape this marriage you are going to have to RUN, BRONWYNN, RUN!

What players said about "Run, Bronwynn, Run!":

I helped betatest this game.
In this game you play the role of Princess Bronwynn, who has to escape from her own castle, since her father, the king, has promised that Bronwynn should marry the loathsome prince Timothy of Xabia. The game is set in the same world as the Alaric Blackmoon games and if everything goes well, you will come across a character from these games near the end.
After escaping the castle your troubles do not end, since the king's soldiers are looking for you all over the country. You need to escape to Hecate to be safe.
The game is pretty much in Larry's usual style, though perhaps with slightly less violence, so you have to remember to search, look under and behind, to ensure you have everything you need before you proceed.
The game has some nice puzzles and a good story, so as usual with Larry's games, I can certainly recommend it.

THE DWARF OF DIREWOOD FOREST

Adventures in the World of Alaric Blackmoon - Episode 2:

You are Grimmel, son of Mulkin of the dwarven Whyldstone clan and you live in the vast Direwood forest in the northern part of the kingdom of Hecate. Some of your clanmates have been captured by the neighbouring Turdrock clan and you - rather rashly - have volunteered to try to rescue them.

Are you dwarf enough to save your clanmates from the clutches of the rival dwarven clan? Find out in...

THE DWARF OF DIREWOOD FOREST

MAGNETIC MOON

The Intrepid Space Adventures of Mike Erlin - Chapter 1:

You are Mike Erlin, assistant astro-navigator on the survey spaceship "Stellar Queen". Your ship has been dragged out of space onto the moon of an earth-like planet by a tractor beam and is now trapped on the surface of the moon. Your captain has refused you permission to join the away team that is going to search for the source of the beam, a giant underground installation. You resolve to get off the ship and search for this installation yourself, but first you must get out of the control room un-noticed by the captain and equip yourself for the quest.

What players said about "Magnetic Moon":

Review by Denk (Denmark), Wednesday 18th September 2019:

I helped betatest this game.
In this sci-fi adventure you play the role of Mike Erlin aboard the spaceship "Stellar Queen". The spaceship is dragged onto a moon by a tractor beam. It will be up to you to save your ship and crew.
So the game begins. Your first task is to get away from the Stellar Queen since you are not given permission to join the away team. Once you are on the surface of the moon, you will investigate the source of the tractor beam and you will of course encounter some enemies along the way.
It was nice to play a sci-fi adventure for a change after having played Larry Horsfield's six fantasy adventures. However, the writing and the challenging puzzles are very much in Larry's usual style, which means that they are of high quality. As usual, the game is tough so it isn't appropriate for complete newbies but highly recommended to more experienced players.

STARSHIP QUEST

The Intrepid Space Adventures of Mike Erlin - Chapter 2:

You are Lieutenant Mike Erlin, Astro-Navigation Officer on board the FSP Survey Corps spaceship "Stellar Queen". Your solo mission on the "Magnetic Moon" was a great success, but the ship is now heading out of the system to a hyperspace jump point, with orders to take Commander Davey, sole survivor of the wrecked scoutship "Pathfinder", to the nearest hospital base without delay.

You are convinced that the answer to the mystery of the two discs that were given to you by Jaelaine, the beautiful High Priestess of the Psian people - discs that she called the "keys to the universe" - lies on the mother planet of the moon, on which are several huge, abandoned cities and what appear to be vast, empty spaceports. You have told the captain of your theories but he tells you that his orders are specific and the ship cannot be stopped or turned around to allow you to go back to the planet. He orders you to attend to your duties and forget any ideas about jumping ship.
You decide that you cannot rest until you have discovered what these "keys" are for and resolve to once again go it alone and disobey the captain's orders. But HOW exactly are you going to get off the ship - the hyperspace jump is just a few minutes away!

Then you have it - the lifeboats! If you can get to one  of  the  ships'  lifeboats, you can fly back to the planet - but you only  have THREE MINUTES to get yourself some equipment and then launch yourself off the 'Queen in one of the lifeboats - can you do it?

What players said about "Starship Quest":

I helped beta-test this game.
This is the second game in the Mike Erlin trilogy. I like them all very much but this is my favourite. The game begins shortly after the first game (Magnetic Moon) ended: You have received two discs called "the keys to the universe" and you feel certain that the purpose of those two discs can be found on the mother planet of the "magnetic moon". Once again you disobey orders and go to explore the planet after "escaping" from your duties on the spaceship "Stellar Queen".
With the risk of repeating myself, this game is written in Larry's usual style, with lots of ingenious puzzles and requiring that the player is examining, searching etc. everything thoroughly. If you already played "Magnetic Moon", go ahead and play this - it is even better than the first game. If you haven't I recommend that you play "Magnetic Moon" first, though it is possible to play this without having played the first game. Certainly recommended.

REVENGE OF THE SPACE PIRATES

The Intrepid Space Adventures of Mike Erlin - Chapter 3:

Jaelaine, the High Priestess of the Psian people, whom you met on the "Magnetic Moon", has been kidnapped by the space pirates who trapped your spaceship on the moon.
You have gone under cover to try to rescue her - can you discover where she has been taken to and save her from the clutches of the Space Pirates?

What players said about "Revenge of the Space Pirates":

Review by Denk (Denmark), Saturday, November 30th 2019:

I helped beta-test this game. This is (for the time being) the last game in the Mike Erlin sci-fi trilogy. It is written in Larry's usual style with nice puzzles and an interesting story. Still, it has its own unique original feel.
This game continues two years after the game "Starship Quest". Jaelaine, the High Priestess of the Psian people has been kidnapped. A clue points towards the planet Daris. Thus you travel to Daris as an undercover agent in search of Jaelaine.
As usual the game is well implemented and equipped with the VOCAB command, which can inspire you and help you avoid guess-the-verb problems.
This game is a great conclusion to the series, though I hope the series will continue with some new games, now Larry has converted all his 8-bit adventures to ADRIFT.

COMING SOON:

The Intrepid Space Adventures of Mike Erlin - Chapter 4:

You are Mike Erlin, captain of the Federation of Sentient Planets starship Valkyrie. You have been ordered to the planet Euripides in the Sagittarius region of space to investigate why the research station on the planet had suddenly ceased communication with FSP HQ on Earth.

On arriving in orbit around Euripides, attempts are made again to contact the research centre but all fail. Your sensors show that the centre appears to be non-operational and there is no sign of any life whatsoever. You and a small squad of marines shuttle down to the planet and land near the research centre. You immediately see that the centre has been attacked and the main airlock door is open.

Can you discover who - or what - attacked the research centre and what has happened to the staff and solve...

THE EURIPEDES ENIGMA?!

COMPETITION GAMES

I have also written a couple of very small, 1-location games to enter into competitions. These are:

BEAGLE 2

You hear on the TV news that the Beagle 2 Mars lander has been spotted on the surface of the planet by NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. You go to sleep that night but you have a strange dream about flying to Mars in an FTL ship and next thing you are standing on the surface of the planet with Beagle 2 in front of you... and suddenly you realise that this is no dream!

This game was written for the "Anyone in the mood for a comp?" competition in February 2015.
